Laughter Yoga or Laughtercise can prove to really be the best medicine in old age. With research suggesting a number of health benefits and a number of social benefits as well. When we laugh with others it increases our sense of belonging. Laughter Yoga and Laughtercise can get rid of feelings of stress and give people a sense of closeness. Sharing a smile and a laugh within a safe but structured way; Laughter Yoga sessions allow us to laugh for no reason but not without purpose, creating a wonderful opportunity to engage with those around us sharing similar interests regardless of sensory or motor ability. It can even allow those who have fading cognitive abilities to connect and communicate with others through laughter.
It’s sad to say but it seems that the amount we laugh diminishes with age. Children laugh up to 400 times a day with adults only laughing about 14 times a day. There really is no need for this reduction in laughter to happen; we can laugh more if we want to. Whatever our age group we have our own set of pressures and stresses and as people grow older some concerns give way to others. We need to be aware that as we grow older our general health can often be in decline either through illness or just general wear and tear which restricts our lives in some way.
But it’s not just the physical effects of growing older. Other areas of life can be affected to particularly when people retire from their jobs. This big change in a person’s life can bring with it a number of challenges. For many people work not only provides an income but also acts as a social outlet. After retirement it’s not uncommon for people to feel rejected, lonely and even ‘useless’. This can lead to mental health problems such as anxiety or depression.
